Australia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! One of the best ways to experience this serenity, if permitted, is to take yourself down to the sand and find a five-star camping spot. Whether you're brand new to off-roading or an experienced 4x4 owner, exploring and camping on sand can be challenging.
Some tips to help you and your vehicle navigate the sand easier and without issues.
- Tyre Pressure
- First and foremost, when travelling offroad and especially on the sand, it can be incredibly beneficial to lower the pressure on your tyres.
- This helps your tyres give a wider profile, allowing more surface area of the tyre to drive 'on top' of the sand rather than cutting through it.
- Recovery Boards/Tracks
- Recovery tracks are always handy to have with you on any 4WD adventure. They can provide a makeshift surface where your vehicle's tyres can find traction to get you out of those soft spots in sand or mud.
- Bring a shovel. In order to put the recovery boards under the front of your tyres, you'll most likely have to dig the terrain so you can see the bottom of your tyres.
- Steering Techniques & Momentum
- Different steering techniques will sometimes be the difference between gliding over sand soft spots and sinking in them.
- Sand driving can be unpredictable at times, and you might find that the sand will dictate the direction your vehicle goes. Smooth steering motions partnered with a consistent amount of throttle is the best combination to get yourself across the sand and more importantly, in the direction want to go.
