How to change a tyre in the bush

Bush Mechanics

Changing a tyre can be a daunting task for even the most experienced driver, but it becomes even more challenging when you're in the middle of the bush. However, with the right tools and a bit of knowledge, you can change a tyre quickly and safely, even in the most remote locations.

The first thing you'll need is a spare tyre, as well as a jack and a lug wrench. These tools should be included in your vehicle's tool kit, but it's always a good idea to check before setting off on a trip. In addition, you'll also need a wheel chock to secure the vehicle and a wheel nut wrench to remove the wheel nuts.

Once you have all the necessary tools, you can begin the tyre changing process. First, find a level and stable surface to work on, if you can't solid ground something as simple as a piece of timber can be used to stabilse the jack. If you're on a slope, use the wheel chock to secure the vehicle and prevent it from rolling. Next, loosen the wheel nuts by turning them counterclockwise with the lug wrench, but don't remove them completely just yet.

Next, use the jack to lift the vehicle off the ground. Make sure to position the jack correctly, following the instructions in your vehicle's manual. Once the vehicle is lifted, you can remove the wheel nuts and take off the tyre. Be careful not to damage the wheel or the tyre, and set them aside.

Now, you can mount the spare tyre onto the wheel hub. Start by aligning the holes in the tyre with the studs on the wheel hub, then carefully lower the tyre onto the hub. Once the tyre is in place, you can thread the wheel nuts back onto the studs, using the wheel nut wrench to tighten them.

Once the tyre is securely fastened, you can use the jack to lower the vehicle back to the ground. Finally, use the lug wrench to fully tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern, making sure they are securely tightened.

In summary, changing a tyre in the bush is a bit more challenging than doing it in a more convenient location, but it's a skill that everyone should have. With the right tools and a bit of know-how, you can change a tyre quickly and safely, even in the middle of nowhere.
